Snapchat Faces Dutch Probe Over Vape Sales to Minors
The Dutch competition regulator, the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), has begun an investigation into Snapchat after concerns that the platform enables children to purchase vapes.
The case was triggered by a complaint from the Youth Smoking Prevention Foundation, which reported finding hundreds of vape sellers through a test involving 11 underage participants. The foundation argued that Snapchat has failed to meet its obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA), an EU law that requires platforms to protect minors and block illegal sales.
ACM board member Manon Leijten stressed the importance of safeguarding children online:
“Platforms such as Snapchat must take responsibility to ensure that illegal products are not traded on their services.”
As part of the inquiry, the ACM will assess whether Snapchat has taken adequate measures to comply with the DSA. If violations are confirmed, the regulator may impose hefty fines, enforcement orders, or recurring penalties.
Because Snapchat is designated a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP), the European Commission also has oversight of the case. The ACM confirmed it is working in close cooperation with Brussels while the investigation is underway.
The regulator declined to give a timeline for the probe and said no further statements will be made until progress has been made.
